Title: Granny B Story

Family Recipe

Granny B (Blackett) was born on November 08, 1915. She loved making cookies for others, and she loved sitting down with her children and enjoying these fresh-baked goodies. Using prized family recipes, Granny B learned to create the softest and most delicious cookies – cookies that tranformed every-day occasions into delightful celebrations. She would be tickled pink to know how many “celebrations” her Granny B cookies create for folks across the country every day.

Granny B passed on the love of baking delicious cookies to her daughter, Diane. As Diane remembers, “We would spend hours together talking and baking.  It was great fun and where I learned all the little baking secrets”  With Diane in the kitchen, the Blackett family cookies began decorating more events, celebrating more parties, and rewarding and motivating more good behavior from her brothers. The pink cookie became a family recipe for fun.

A magnet on the fridge read, “A balanced diet is a cookie in both hands.”

Wisdom of Solomon

Diane grew up and was discovered by a young enterprising spirit named Wes Homolik, who was running the football for BYU.  After a dreamy courtship, they married and decided to open Papa Demarco’s Pizza.  The pizza was fantastic but the restaurant had no desserts.  Granny B advised the newlyweds that Diane should bake and offer the family’s irresistible pink-frosted sugar cookie.  Granny B was wise, and she was right.

From the first day the cookies were offered, they were a huge homerun.  The deliciously flavorful and moist cookie all dressed up in the melt-in-your-mouth pink frosting was an irresistible combination. Diane recalls it was more challenging to keep the dessert platter full of cookies than it was to walk on her hands to the ‘Y’ perched up on the mountain overlooking the store.  One evening, two nurses came in and both wanted the last cookie.  What to do?  Wes split the cookie in half and offered each customer her prize. With the wisdom of Solomon, Wes and Diane decided cookies were the real gems and founded Granny B’s.

The Pink Phenomenon

Creating the perfect pink-frosted sugar cookie is an art form that cannot be rushed – just ask Diane.  With the phenomenal success of the pink cookie, she was baking and frosting around the clock. To keep up with demand, the creative duo found a set of machines that would roll the dough just right, invented a clever contraption to shape and cut-out multiple cookies at once, and hired friends and family to help bake, frost and decorate. Wes and Diane took great care to make sure Granny B would proudly approve of each cookie before they delivered the treats to their customers.

To help bootstrap Granny B’s growth, Wes traded his beloved ski boat for two-years rent in a larger facility located in Provo, Utah.  Wes started outside sales with the Conoco next door, where you can still find Granny B’s cookies today.  He quickly found he was delivering fresh cookies to most convenience stores in Utah County with numerous requests for expanded distribution.  As fast as Diane and team could make them and Wes could deliver them, the pink cookie expanded throughout the region.

The Softilicious Sensations

As Granny B’s grew and expanded, happy customers could not get enough of the fresh, soft and uniquely delicious cookies.  Continuing to use family recipes and the highest-quality ingredients, Granny B introduced other softilicious sensations including Chunky Chocolate, Snickerdoodle, Candy, Pumpkin, Chocolate Sandwich, Oatmeal Raisin, Ginger Chewy and many others.

Wes and Diane’s children (Scott, Paul, Elise and Kyle) grew up in the business and have all spent time working magic in the bakery and building a retail store (come see us!).  The family continues to actively create and bake fresh, delicious products.  Cookie dough was introduced to the applause of consumers who want the softilicious taste of Granny B’s cookies warm out of the oven, and with the wonderful fresh-baked aroma filling their homes.  Holiday and birthday sugar cookie frosting kits have been great fun for kids in schools and now the festive activity along with its delicious results are being offered in retail stores and online.

Granny B’s continues to build on its legacy and tradition of baking fresh, delightfully soft and delicious cookies.  Just like Granny B, we do it for the smiles.

Enjoy a Granny B’s cookie and transform your ordinary day into a softilicious celebration!
